View of Odongdo Island from the Yeosu Maritime Cable Car |
Dear readers, hello.
Today, I would like to introduce you to Yeosu, a coastal city in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, beloved by both locals and travelers alike.
In the past, Yeosu was considered a somewhat distant destination due to its limited accessibility from Seoul and the metropolitan area. However, with the recent expansion of transportation options, it has become a far more convenient place to visit.
Most notably, the opening of Yeosu Airport now allows travelers to fly directly to the city.
This means Yeosu is no longer a destination to postpone simply because of distance; it has become a must-visit travel spot.
For many Koreans, including myself, Yeosu is a place that immediately brings to mind one of our most revered historical figures—Admiral Yi Sun-sin.
For readers who may not be familiar with him, he is undoubtedly regarded as one of the two most respected figures in Korean history, alongside King Sejong the Great.
Admiral Yi is renowned for his legendary record of 23 victories in 23 naval battles during the war against Japan, which began in 1592 and lasted seven years.
As for King Sejong, who created the Korean alphabet Hangul, I look forward to introducing him in another article.
Once you arrive in Yeosu, the first destination I recommend is Odongdo Island.
This small island is said to have been named “Odongdo” because of the abundance of Paulownia trees (called “odong” in Korean) growing there.
In the past, the only way to reach Odongdo was by boat, but now a pedestrian causeway connects the island to the mainland, making access much easier.
This picturesque walkway has been selected as one of Korea’s 100 Most Beautiful Roads, and it offers stunning views of the sea and surrounding landscape.
From the Yeosu Maritime Cable Car, visitors can enjoy an incredible bird’s-eye view of Odongdo and its lush greenery set against the sparkling ocean.
Upon reaching the island, travelers can explore scenic walking trails, admire coastal cliffs, and experience the serene beauty that has made Odongdo one of Yeosu’s most beloved attractions.
Admiral Yi Sun-sin is considered one of the greatest naval commanders in Korean history.
When the Imjin War (Japanese invasions of Korea) broke out in 1592, he led the Joseon navy and achieved a legendary record of 23 victories in 23 battles, never once tasting defeat.
Among his many triumphs, the Battle of Hansando (July 1592) stands out as a masterpiece of naval strategy.
Utilizing a formation known as the Crane Wing Formation (Hakikjin), Admiral Yi encircled and destroyed the enemy fleet with remarkable precision.
This tactic is still studied in military academies around the world as an example of brilliant naval warfare.
One of Admiral Yi’s greatest innovations was the Geobukseon, or Turtle Ship, widely recognized as the world’s first ironclad warship.
Its exterior was covered in iron plates to withstand arrows and cannon fire, while multiple cannon ports allowed it to attack in all directions.
The dragon-shaped head at the front of the ship could emit smoke and flames, striking fear into enemy forces before the battle even began.
Beyond his military genius, Admiral Yi was also known for his integrity and leadership.
He consistently prioritized the safety of his soldiers and maintained strict discipline without losing the respect and loyalty of his men.
His wartime journal, Nanjung Ilgi (War Diary), reveals not only his tactical mind but also his deep humanity—his struggles, reflections, and unwavering sense of duty to his country and people.
Yeosu is beautiful year-round, but the best seasons to visit are spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November).
In spring, camellias, azaleas, and cherry blossoms paint the city in vibrant colors, while autumn offers crisp air and stunning sunsets along the coastline.
Summer (July–August) is ideal for water sports, though it can be crowded, while winter offers a quieter, more reflective atmosphere.

A short walk from here takes you to Jinnamgwan Hall, an important historical site from the Joseon era.

End your day at Dolsan Bridge or Odongdo’s lighthouse, watching the city lights reflect on the waves.
The romantic view is so iconic that it inspired the famous Korean song, Yeosu Night Sea.

Local night markets, such as Gyodong Market, are perfect for tasting a variety of fresh seafood and street snacks at reasonable prices.
Transportation: Yeosu is easily accessible by KTX (high-speed train) from Seoul (about 3 hours). Local buses and taxis are convenient for short distances.

Yeosu is not just a travel destination; it is a place where history, nature, and culture come together in perfect harmony.
From the courage and legacy of Admiral Yi Sun-sin to the peaceful beauty of Odoengdo Island and the breathtaking scenery of the night sea, every corner of Yeosu tells a story.
For travelers, Yeosu offers more than scenic views. It invites reflection, inspires appreciation for history, and provides moments of serenity amidst nature.
Whether you are walking along the coastal trails, gazing at the endless horizon, or savoring the city’s culinary treasures, Yeosu leaves an impression that lingers long after your journey ends.
